WHO IS JURE GRANDO- OLDEST EUROPEAN VAMPIRE ?
Jure Grando is the oldest European vampire identified with name and surname in documented records. The publication of documents on his case predates by several decades the vampire epidemic in Serbia when the empress Maria Theresa even set up a vampire commission. As Jure Grando’s case was transcribed in many old anthologies of horror stories, it inspired the appearance of vampire literature in the nineteenth century, from John Polidori’s novel The Vampyre (1819), followed by the most famous vampire novel Dracula by Bram Stoker (1897), to the present day when Jure Grando has already become the hero of a dozen new books and is soon to appear in a film.
LEGEND OF THE VAMPIRE FROM KRINGA
One dark night in 1672 nine villagers of Kringa, led by the village headman and priest, went to the graveyard determined to fight the pest that has been terrorizing the village for 16 years. Since his death in 1656, the villager Jure Grando used to arise every night from his grave, roam the village, knock on the doors of houses where someone would die soon afterwards, as well as visit and harass his widow. Nine executioners dug up the grave of the undead night creature and found a preserved corpse with a red-cheeked and grinning face. After having unsuccessfully tried to pierce him with a hawthorn stake, the vampire’s head was cut off, the grave was covered up and Jure Grando has not harmed the villagers of Kringa ever since.
JANEZ VAJKARD VALVASOR
The case of decapitation of the vampire Jure Grando in Kringa was first described by the Slovenian historian and travel writer Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641-1693) in his book The Glory of the Duchy of Carniiola (Die Ehre Dess Herzogthums Crain), that was published in Nurnberg in 1689
